Mitsubishi Motors Corp.’s new Mi-Tech concept crossover features a plug-in hybrid system that teams four electric motors—two on each axle—with a small gasoline-fueled turbine generator.
The carmaker will publicly unveil the concept later this month at the Tokyo auto show. The latest teaser image shows a rugged open-top, two-seat compact crossover vehicle.
Mitsubishi says the series hybrid system is smaller and lighter than the parallel hybrid unit used in the current plug-in variant of the Outlander crossover. The carmaker plans to use the new architecture in future compact vehicles.
In addition to saving weight, the new design provides all-wheel drive, torque vectoring, extended all-electric driving capability, and better off-road capabilities, according to the company.
The Mi-Tech also features advanced driver assist systems and a human machine interface with augmented reality technology. The latter can project holographic images onto the vehicle’s windshield.
