Hyundai Motor Co. says it will begin high-volume production of Level 4 driverless vehicles within five years.
Executive Vice Chairman Chung Euisun tells South Korean reporters that he also anticipates that customers can expect fully autonomous, Level 5 self-driving cars after 2030.
Level 4 cars can drive themselves under most driving conditions with no human monitoring. Chung says the technology to enable such capabilities will come from the Hyundai launched yesterday with U.S. software developer Aptiv plc. Hyundai and its Kia affiliate will invest a combined $1.6 billion in the venture.
