BMW AG is mulling the potential of a high-powered, hybrid supercar, Autocar reports.

If approved, the model could be launched by 2023, according the British enthusiast magazine. The vehicle likely would be based on the lightweight carbon fiber architecture used for the current i8 hybrid sports car.

Autocar speculates that the new hybrid car will be outfitted with a 6-cylinder engine and electric motors could produce a combined 700 hp. The i8’s 1.5-liter 3-cylinder engine and electric motors generate 369 hp, while the upcoming conventionally powered M8 flagship coupe will top out at 620 hp.

Noting that a “super-sports car” is every engineer’s dream to develop, BMW development chief Frohlich says partial electrification can provide a “real performance package.” He tells Autocar that next-generation electric drivetrains teamed with advanced lightweighting can provide the power of a V-8 engine with the sporty feel of BMW’s M-brand.

A high-powered BMW hybrid would compete against supercars such as the Honda NSX and upcoming models from Aston Martin, Ferrari and McLaren.
