BMW AG has become the first foreign carmaker to win permission to test autonomous vehicles on public roads in China, according to the Shanghai Daily.
Shanghai’s Commission of Economy and Information Technology, which began in March to issue licenses for self-driving-car tests, granted BMW permits to test two 7 Series large sedans.
The licenses enable developers to use only a 5.6-km (3.5-mile) route in Shanghai. The newspaper says two Chinese carmakers, SAIC and electric-car startup NIO, have logged a combined 6,000 km (3,700 miles) of testing to date.
