Audi e-tron to Get Integrated Toll Transponder

Audi AG’s upcoming all-electric e-tron crossover vehicle will feature an electronic toll-payment transponder built into the rearview mirror.
The device will be compatible with certain toll roads in the U.S. and Canada. Zeeland, Mich.-based Gentex Corp. will supply the module, which eliminates the need for multiple toll accounts and devices when traveling between states and countries.
Motorists can turn the system on and make adjustments—including using high-occupancy vehicle settings—via the car’s touchscreen navigation system. The toll payment technology was developed by Nashville-based TransCore, which licenses it to Gentex.
Audi has been testing the system for several months in select U.S. cities. The carmaker is expected to offer the feature on other vehicles in coming months.
The all-new e-tron is due to be unveiled next week in San Francisco. Sales will start in early 2019.
