About
The Winter issue of ArtReview Asia focuses on relationships between power and geography in the work of artists tackling tradition through subversions of cultural and political positions. Texts include an examination of the ruptured relationship between the Aboriginal Yolngu people of Australia’s Northern Territory and Macassan fisherfolk; Bangkok-based filmmaker Taiki Sakpisit’s use of cinema to unpack Thailand’s troubled past; pioneering documentary filmmaker Haneda Sumiko’s subtle negotiations of urban and rural life in postwar Japan; and Cian Dayrit’s ‘counter-cartographic’ reframing of the ideals of history and heritage in his native Philippines.
